Beaconsfield Publishers Ltd was founded by John Churchill in 1978 and specializes in books for the health care market - with a strong commitment to homeopathic medicine.
Beaconsfield intentionally limits their catalog to a few dozen "carefully developed" titles: either original books that are of perennial interest, or else fully reworked new editions of existing titles.
In more than 25 years of operation, they have only put one book out of print. Their efforts are appreciated by both authors and buyers who like to feel that all things don't necessarily have to vanish without warning.
John writes about his initial captivation with homeopathy:
How Homeopathy Captured Me
I read a natural sciences degree at Cambridge and quite soon, in the early '60s, went to New York as an editor for a specialist publisher producing books in theoretical physics, mathematics and chemistry. I had always been interested in the way that complex information was taught, and it was a very formative and interesting period to be working in North America.
On returning to the UK at the end of the 60's I continued with publishing in the exact sciences. By chance I ran across some high-level nursing staff at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, one of our premier cancer hospitals, and realised that in fact I wanted to be publishing in the healthcare sector.
Quite by chance the chairman of the company where I was then working asked me whether I knew that the Queen was treated homeopathically and that she was also a good homeopath herself. I said I knew nothing about this at all but went to the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital to find out a little more.
I was struck by the sympathetic quality of the homeopathic doctors there and subsequently of the non-medical homeopaths I met by and by, feeling that I was really meeting people whose interest in the care of their patients depended entirely on their understanding of those patients as individuals. I was fascinated by this and quite soon began to publish in the field.
A large part of my company's output is now in homeopathy and it has been a particular pleasure to see how the whole discipline has become of greater and greater importance to a public which is determined to take an intelligent responsibility for their own healthcare.
