Working largely from Boger's Synoptic Key, Phatak presents the most important symptoms in plain language so the student of materia medica will grasp a deeper understanding. Particularly useful is his format wherein the remedy's affinity is stated at the outset. India

Details
Materia Medica of Homeopathic Medicines, by S. R. Phatak, was first published in 1977.In compiling this materia medica Dr. Phatak has listed all the symptoms given by Boger in his Synoptic Key. Further, he has tried to remove ambiguities and simplified the writing. In addition Dr. Phatak has gathered many useful clinical symptoms from other sources.
Under generalities the profile picture of the remedy is given along with the regions on which it acts and how it acts, diseases that it is liable to cure, and causations. Then general modalities of the remedy are given, after that, regional symptoms with particulars follow.
Phatak felt that remedies were best identified by the symptoms found in the Mind, Generalities, and Modalities. To then identify the remedy in relation to the patient the homeopath should then look at the corresponding rubrics in the repertory.
The relative importance of each remedy would then be fixed in the homeopath's mind by comparing it with other remedies under the same rubric.
Heritage
A brief materia medica derived primarily from the works of Boger, with additions."He [Boger] has given clues in his Synoptic Key for compiling such books. With my poor intellect and limited knowledge of homeopathy, I have tried to fulfill his wish. How far I am successful in my attempt, only time will show." Republished in the UK in 1988.
Julian Winston writes:
While most practitioners in the USA who wanted a small "pocket manual" often chose the Boericke work, many in the UK preferred the Phatak work.
In a comparison between them one may find Phatak to be a bit more readable. Those who have used it say that the summaries he presents of the remedies contain useful details that are not found in Boericke's.

In presenting this materia medica, Dr. Phatak has not only given Boger's symptomatology (Synoptic Key), but he has explained the meaning of obscure words, and what is more, he has garnered many useful clinical and other symptoms from other materia medicas.
An extremely useful book for study and reference.
